Work, Work, Work!

Hey guys, how is everyone doing today? Monday came in like freight train, but all in all, it was pretty great! The countdown to DIBELS has begun! I thought Oral Reading Fluency in 1st grade was hard, but whew! Getting these nonsense words down is even harder! Especially when students are struggling with letter sounds and blending!

We began our insect unit today, and I'm thinking I might make it a week and half, because there is so much to cover! Well, so much that I want to cover.  I'll share some pictures tomorrow, because we are in the middle of creating a chart, and we will finish it then.

Since moving to Kindergarten this year, I've had to re-do what my kiddos do during intervention every morning. Now, at the beginning of the year, it was absolutely horrible. I thought that they I wasn't going to make it!!! I have this on the Promethean Board, and this is basically what they do every morning. Sometimes I give them free writing time, or they tell me what they did over the weekend, etc.

Now, at the beginning of the year, we only did the top part, we only moved to daily fix-its in the second semester. I would alternate between the directed journal writing, and the daily fix it. Some of them are so quick at this point of the school year, I have found the need to combine them together.  So, I have a question for you guys, what do you have your children do during intervention time?

  1. I have been wanting to do fix-its with my kids, but have been too nervous! You've inspired me to try it this last nine weeks!

  2. I do the Evan Moor Daily Language and I think it has helped my students quite a bit. I started that in January. Before that, I do Frog Press' Drops in a Bucket Language which my students can do better at the beginning of the year.

  3. I love that you do this too! I have felt like a crazy lady sometimes wanting my kinders to fix up sentences, but I KNOW they can do it. I am also happy to hear you are going crazy with Dibels - yikes. We start them up next week and I am dreading it. I just can't believe the year is almost finished.
Enjoy your week and your insects!

  4. They can definitely do it, it's amazing what they can do at this point of the year. Then you realize it's because of the tough times when you're pulling and pulling it out of them.
