First Week Work!

I don't know about you, but I was done for at the end of this first week of school! I was just amazed at how the human body can keep going, and then completely crash the moment I came home!

This year our counselor's are going to talk to our kiddos about how important it is to be bucket-fillers, instead of bucket-dippers. It is a great idea to go along with the 7 Habits of Happy Kids. I found this great idea on Pinterest, and it used a book about bucket-filling that was different from the one that they are going to use. I figured the earlier we start out on that path the better!

First, we read Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud. My kids really loved it!

Next, we talked sorted behaviors that were true to bucket fillers, and those that were true for bucket dippers. I was impressed with how quickly they understood and applied the concept!

As you can see in the picture below, I left the bottom part empty. As we progress in the year, and as we begin to learn about the 7 Habits of Happy Kids, we are going to add more ideas to it. This way, it will become an anchor chart that is active.

We also hung this up in our room, as a reminder when we come and go!

Here is a review of some first week activities that we did. (Someone remind me to take the date stamp off of my camera, lol!!)

We did a kindergarten survey, about how they felt to be starting kindergarten.

This student feels much better now, and is even learning to write her name!!

We also did some Kissing Hand activities.

I know we've seen these frames all over Pinterest, and I just didn't have time to make one. Luckily, I have a friend who made one, and she was gracious enough to let me borrow hers!! Yay!!

That's all for now, talk to you later!

Oodles of Tech Tips Tuesday: Live Binders

I know, I know, don't give me that look!
I missed last week's Oodles of Tech Tips Tuesday! We had this get together after work,
where my school, the intermediate school, and the middle school got together and did some
team-building activities. I was one of the teachers that helped to put it together, and after I got home I was sooooooooooooo tired!!!!!! I apologize!

It also just so happens that for Teacher Week on Blog Hoppin', it's Tech Tip Tuesday also!! Who knew!!

Today, I want to talk to you about Live Binders! Hmmmm.......what in the world is that?
 (Yes, I can read minds!)

Just like Pinterest is an online filing and management system, LiveBinders is online storage
that you can use for your classroom. As their tagline states, your 3-ring binder for the web!

For more information, please visit LiveBinders!!

Teacher Week: Teacher Must Haves

Hey guys! I'm linking up with Blog Hoppin' for Teacher Week!

Here are my teacher must haves!!

1.  Skittles, Starburst, or Lifesavers! Sometimes you just need something that is sweet to get you going!! Hehe!

2.  My Promethean Board - I literally teach all day long from it, and the kids also do centers at the board. I have morning work here, reading flipcharts, math flipcharts, etc. I absolutely love it!

This is actually the one that I have now, except for those weird legs it's standing on....hmmmm...

3.  My ELMO - otherwise known as a document camera. I didn't have one until last year, and I can't believe what I'd been missing! This thing is awesome!!

4.  My iPad's and iPod's - I had one iPad and 6 iPod's last year, and this year my principal bought them for the whole school. So now I have two iPad's and 9 iPod's, and I'm so glad, because they really keep the kids engaged. I wish I had enough for everyone!! ( I actually have a white one and a black one).

5.  My printer and laminator for the home - we all know how this goes hand in hand!! I print and then I laminate!! I was so sad when my laminator went out a few weeks ago. I went straight to Wal-Mart and got another one! These things are lifesavers!!

Just so you know, they changed the look of the laminator!!!  This is the new one. (Yeah, yeah, I know its sideways, but what can I do? (If you really do know, please tell me!))

6.  And when all of that technology fails--and it will, at some point, I go back to the tried and true!! Chart Paper and markers!!! Waaahooooo!!!

I know, sideways!!

Check back later in the week for those first days of school pics!!

That's all for now folks, talk to you later!!!

If You're Exhausted & You Know It.....

.......clap your hands!!!!!! Clap, Clap! Silly, I know, but that's exactly how I feel!!! I am beyond exhausted, and the students haven't even gotten to school yet!!!!

I have this really old, ugly table in my room, and last year I simply covered it up with fabric, by stapling it to the bottom of the table. I even hot glued it to the bottom when it starting coming off. Well, after having kindergarteners all over it, I decided to take a different approach.

I know you've seen the post by Jennifer at First Grade Blue Skies, the one where she covered her intervention table with shelf liner. So, I decided that maybe I could do the same thing!

Yeah, right! LOL, first of all, I couldn't even find any remotely cute shelf liner, ANYWHERE!!!! I mean, it's like they disappeared into a vortex or something!!!! So, I had to think really hard about what I was going to do! I had to settle for a liner that makes my table look like a corkboard.

Let me warn you, it is nowhere as cute as Jennifer's!!! Hehehehehe!!!!

In the end, I fell in love with it, because it made a smooth surface, which was really my goal!! Don't worry, I'm still looking for an extremely cute shelf liner!!!

Last night was our Meet the Teacher, and I was able to meet several of my new kinders!!! Whew, I have a feeling that some of them are going to be a handful!!!

To introduce them to the class, I had a little goodie bag, a Kindergarten Survival kit, which I got from Pinterest, of course!!!

I thought this was the cutest ever!! My new students really liked it, and couldn't wait to open the bag!!
It's pinned to my Pinterest Back to School board, so check it out!

Well, I'm off to clean the house (boo!), there's school stuff all over it!!!

Talk to you later!

Back to Work I Go!!

Hey everyone!!! I've been away the past few days, tirelessly looking through TPT for awesome packs to add to my shopping cart!!

Well, today was the first official day back for teachers!! The alarm clock really rung early this morning, I still wasn't prepared for it!! I worked on some projects over the weekend, and I was so excited to get to my classroom this morning!!

Here's an update on my classroom so far:

I've gotten some of my back to school books out, and of course this isn't all of them! The rest of them are behind that brown stand you see in a basket! I like to call these my first day of school books, well, the ones I'll choose from anyways!!

Here's a close-up of my shower curtain hooks (I don't know why I thought you needed to see it, except for the fact that it's very, very cool!!). They're from Target, by the way.

I've always done some kind of a compliment system for my classroom. I've done the chain link thing, (which worked better in 1st grade).  Last year I did stars on the side of my desk, and when they had earned 10 stars they got to have a compliment party. After the tornado I lost some stars (and was too lazy to create some more, lol), so I'm changing it up this year.

I found the cutest idea on Pinterest, and I modeled mine after this teachers compliment label (with a few changes, of course!).

Now I've just got to find some cute colored clothespins, and I can't seem to find any!!
This is how it turned out, though I'm not too sure about it. Oh well, it's definitely here to stay!!

I also changed my signs for pencils. I've always had them in tall red cups, with a sign for sharpened pencils, and those that need to be sharpened. So, I found another cute sign, via Pinterest, of course! I tried to find the link on Pinterest to share with you guys, but of course I can't seem to find it just now! (I think that means that I have too many pins!!) However, I know it's there on one of my boards, I promise!!

I also re-vamped my behavior system. I still use the same colors, but my kiddos will use clothespins this time. Normally, I have these cute polka dot library pockets, and they begin each day on green. If they get into trouble, then have to put sticks in their pockets. They go from green, to yellow, to orange, and then to red. I also have purple for children who have excellent behavior and have been leaders in the class. Same idea, different method.

This year I decided to go with purple being a leader, since we are in The Leader in Me process. I'm really excited about using The 7 Habits of Happy Kids in my classroom!!!

I'm so sorry y'all, I know this was a long post, and it had tons of pictures!! Thanks for staying until the end!!

Talk to you later!

Classroom Progress

Ok, I know I promised pics of my classroom. Of course everything isn't done, and I wanted everything to be perfect! Then I thought to myself, who else would understand exactly what I'm going through, if not a teacher! We go through this process every year, arranging and re-arranging our classroom.

Well, I for one did not realize how hard it was going to be. A lot of my read-alouds for the beginning of school, and decorations and centers were packed away. I only had January-May in my classroom. It was easier after the tornado, just to pick up from where we were and move forward. So, I really have to think about where everything is going to go, instead of simply unpacking and placing it where it goes pretty much year after year, except for a bit of tweaking here and there.

So here it is, the good, the bad & the ugly!!! Don't say I didn't warn you!!!!

As you can see, I have stuff spread out everywhere!!!!!

Normally my shower curtains cover my mess on the shelves!
The bookcase behind my intervention table is normally filled with books, but I have nowhere to place it in the classroom without cutting off my line of sight!! Gotta keep my eyes on the kiddos!!

Though I still need to place books on it this year, because I don't have any other space. Otherwise, I'll just end up putting a lot of junk on it!!

If you look to the far left of this picture I pulled this bookcase out to create a reading space for my kids. When we arrived here in January, I just pushed it against that wall.
So, I pulled it out, painted that wall space, and added a rug!

Thinking about swapping the bookcase and trash can. Hmmm.....What do you think?

I also created these book bin labels, and I'm pretty sure I'll end up changing them around
 before school starts.

Where would I be without my trusty glue gun!!!! With that orange extension cord I can take it all over the room, and even in the hallway!! (See how excited I get about small things??!!!?!)

This year we are working on becoming a Lighthouse School for The Leader in Me.
Here are the 7 habits of happy kids!!

I also put my numbers up, courtesy of Vickie Plant!! I absolutely love them, and they match my primary colors & polka dot theme!! Thanks Vickie!!

And my word wall!!!!

Ta-da!!! Phew!! Finally done! There you have it, my progress so far!!

I also completed my September Morning Work Packer for Kindergarten, because I have a feeling that the rest of August is going to go by really fast, and September will be here before you know it!!

Check it out!

Ok, sorry soooo long!!!

Talk to you later!!!

Oodles of Tech Tips Tuesday: Evernote

As teachers we have to take a lot of notes. Make that a TON of notes! If you are fortunate enough to have an iPad or a smartphone, Evernote is a great app that allows you to take notes. Did I mention that it is also free????  I don't have an printer that I can print from my iPad with, so I have to print from my laptop.  At the beginning, I found it hard to work on the iPad, because then I'd have to email everything so that I could access it.

Well, in steps Evernote. Not only is there an app for that, but they also have a desktop version!! The best thing about this app is that it will sync everything together!! So, I can be taking notes from my iPad, and if I want to continue working on it later, or print something out, I can just login to the website, and everything will be there!! If necessary, I can check something on my phone really quick!

Here are some ways that I have used Evernote....I included shots from my laptop screen, but I took all of these notes with my iPad.

As you can see, it keeps everything with a date stamp, and there is even a search option.

I think that the coolest thing is that when you are using the app it allows you to take pictures!! I think this is my favorite feature!!

The pic above was taken in a session of our Back to School Elementary Conference. There were several slides that the presenters showed, and instead of breaking my hand trying to write everything down, I just took a picture of each slide.

I think Evernote is a great way to begin taking notes electronically. I always see a lot of teachers who are new to the iPad, and they carry it around and they still have their pen and pad to take notes. I know it's tough, but try it!!

I had really planned to have some classroom pics today, but I was asked to do something by my principal and I didn't get anything done in my own room today, since I was doing that. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!!

Talk to you later!!
