Organizing the Chaos of Math Centers

Hey guys and dolls, how's it going?

Well, let me tell you, it's been hectic over here,
but more about that in another post!!

It's that time again!! Time for more bright ideas!!!

Today I thought that I would talk about organizing math centers.

For me, I think I do a pretty good job of organizing and managing reading centers.

It's basically done like this:

I use one of these,

some of these,

and voila, there you have it!!!

Math centers, on the other hand, look something like this....

.....I mean, there is just stuff everywhere!!!

No rhyme or reason, just math manipulatives and good intentions!!

In these types of baskets!! And they don't hold too much!

Sigh..............

One day, I decided to see if I could make the process any better.

I really don't do a rotation chart of any kind for math, so that was out.

I sat and decided to make math tubs, that had some kind of order to them,

and that idea gave way to this:

I bought these in the plastic tub & what-not section at Wal-Mart,

and I just numbered them. This way, I could know what was in each tub,

and it also helped me to plan for math centers more easily,

because I'm planning for the tubs.

This is in addition to centers like iPods, the interactive whiteboard

and computers, plus whatever centers are required for our math curriculum.

I also rotate the baskets around each day for math workshop,

and these tubs help me to keep track of that.

For instance, if I know that starting on Monday,

group 1 had tub 1, group 2 had tub 2,

and so forth, I know that on Tuesday group 1 gets tub 2,

group 2 gets tub 3, etc.  It has made my life so much easier,

instead of the chaos that I had resigned myself to!!

This little project has gone so well that I think I'm ready to maybe add tub 7 & 8!
